Santa Catalina Island is a rocky island off the coast of Southern California in the Gulf of Santa Catalina. It is the closest of the Channel Islands and, according to the last census of 2000, has about 3 696 inhabitants. The main city is Avalon which has 3 127 inhabitants. With its swaying palm trees, white sandy beaches, pleasantly warm sea temperatures in summer and moving sunsets, Santa Catalina stands out as a perfect holiday destination. Catalina, as it is often referred to by its residents, has everything you could want from an island vacation, including inviting hotels, fresh seafood cuisine and endless possibilities for water sports suitable for the whole family. Catalina Island is served by the ferry and an airport called “Airport in the Sky”. Ferries depart from Orange County to Newport Beach and Dana Point; other ferries depart from Los Angeles County to Long Beach, San Pedro and Marina del Rey.
